The Alleppey Houseboat is a modern twist on the historic large barges, which were an
essential part of land’s ethos in days gone by. They were usually operated by two men and
were used to transport local goods such as rice, seafood, coconuts, mangoes, spices, and other
commodities. The boats would use a network of several bodies of water known as the
Alleppey Backwaters. Often referred to as the “Venice of the East” because of its natural
beauty, the Alleppey Backwaters are a combination of intertwining lagoons, lakes, and
freshwater rivers which are filled with a vast assortment of fresh seafoods and surrounded by
lush vegetation that are used in most traditional Indian dishes.
